Highlighters aren’t very dangerous and won’t hurt anyone’s health too much. Most highlighters, pens, and markers have dyes, small amounts of alcohol, and a chemical called glycol or glycol ether. Glycol can be dangerous in large amounts, but it is not dangerous in small or trace amounts.
If you eat highlighter ink, you can expect to get stained skin and a mildly upset stomach. If the person eats it, watch for any strange symptoms.
Do not use cleaning products on the stain because it could hurt the surface of the skin. After a few days, the stain goes away on its own. If you have strange symptoms, call the nearest poison centre or see a doctor.
