Former captain Geoffrey Boycott has slammed England’s batsmen for their lack of patience and technique in the first cricket Test that ended in a draw against India. Former England captain Geoffrey Boycott believes that some batsmen could not resist the temptation to play shots on the ball when the ball was not going to play the shot.

He also said that due to too much focus on ODI cricket, his problems are increasing. Captain Joe Root was the only England batsman to make a mark in the first Test of the series. He played innings of 100 and 64 runs. Boycott wrote in his column in ‘The Telegraph’, ‘I recently met Graham Gooch and we talked about England’s batting. Giving the gist of it all, he said, “If the bowler does not give a chance to score runs on four balls, then our batsmen will try to play shots on the fifth or sixth ball and there is every possibility that he will lose his wicket.”

He wrote, ‘The culture of cricket has changed. Many of our batsmen love to play shots and due to more one-day cricket, modern players are very good at it, but their defensive technique frustrates them.

Boycott said, “Given the franchise league, it would seem strange to say stick and play the defensive game but as Gooch said, the teams just need to bowl a few good deliveries because they know that soon the batsman will be able to play the big shot. Will fall into greed.’

England’s batsmen had earlier struggled in the home series against New Zealand as well. “We supporters get frustrated when they always try to play aggressively but we are not surprised because this is the kind of cricket they are being taught at the county level,” Boycott said.

He said, ‘Look at Jack Crowley. He is troubled by this problem. Over the years young batsmen are being taught to bowl big shots to the bowlers because so many ODIs are being played.

The former captain said, ‘Only strike rate is being talked about but for Test matches it is nonsense. If your defense is not strong then the top bowlers in Test cricket will find your weakness with the new ball. What’s the point of playing a lot of catchy shots if you just can’t stay at the crease? That is the root of the problems.

Boycott also targeted openers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley. “Not only former Test cricketers, but club players also look at Rory Burns and Dom Sibley and think they can do better than them,” he said.

Boycott said, ‘Sibley is the opposite of Crowley. He can hold on but he lacks a shot. He cannot rotate the strike, so when he is not able to carry forward the score of himself and the team, then he puts a lot of pressure on himself. Boycott also criticized the batting of Jos Buttler and Dan Lawrence.
