Golden Brooks sheds gentle on breast most cancers in ‘A Lengthy Look within the Mirror’
Golden Brooks stars in “A Lengthy Look within the Mirror,” a brand new quick movie that shines a light-weight on breast most cancers.
“Sadly, [breast cancer] is a situation that basically hits African-American girls,” says Brooks (“Girlfriends,” “Blunt Discuss”).
“A Lengthy Look within the Mirror” is a part of BET Her’s initiative referred to as “The Ready Room,” which promotes Breast Most cancers Consciousness. Written by Deshawn Plair & Sade Oyinade — and directed by veteran actress Vanessa Bell Calloway — it takes a have a look at a damaged relationship between Cynthia (Brooks) and her daughter, Tianna (Trinity Hawkins) that’s examined after Cynthia receives a most cancers prognosis and struggles to deal with the illness and with Tianna. Victoria Rowell co-stars as Dr. Williams.
“It’s a scary second whenever you hear the prognosis that you’ve breast most cancers,” says Brooks. “What’s necessary when one thing like that occurs is that it turns into a part of your story. Early detection is the whole lot. As girls, we simply have to actually be on it — so it’s good to get these Pap smears and mammograms.”
Brooks, best-known to viewers for taking part in Maya Wilkes on “Girlfriend” for eight seasons, says she felt “actually female-empowered” throughout taking pictures, since “A Lengthy Look within the Mirror” featured a predominantly feminine manufacturing group. “I really like the truth that BET Her pays consideration to the feminine aspect of the story,” she says. “There’s a feminine producer and director Vanessa Bell Calloway. It felt nice to be part of this machine that was operating on all this estrogen.”
There’s a scene within the film the place Cynthia removes her wig after present process chemotherapy — and that, says Brooks, took an actual emotional toll on her.
“Hair is our crown. It’s our name to fame, our morning glory,” she says. “It’s not the be-all and end-all, however I feel what’s so fascinating is that [Cynthia] could be very youth-obsessed. She has a really younger boyfriend and appears are the whole lot to her — after which all of it comes full circle.
“When all is claimed and executed she has to take her wig off and look within the mirror and see that is actually who she is,” Brooks says, “and that’s a tough factor for her to do … and he or she will get indignant.
“However that second is actual,” she says. “[Her wig] is only a self-importance facet of us as girls, particularly as black girls, and to take that journey was positively eye-opening for me. I feel it exposes us, and it’s necessary for our group to see us as actresses strip all the way down to that position — the make-up, lashes, the hair, the outfit, the nails …it’s actually shedding gentle on breast most cancers however, on the identical time, liberating us to say ‘I can take roles the place I will be the one who’s not utterly put-together.’”
And, Brooks says, the film has made her view life otherwise, notably in terms of her 11-year-old daughter.
I have a look at [the movie] as a coming-of-age story a couple of mom and a daughter,” she says. “It goes into so many
completely different chapters from start to toddler to preteen to grownup and all of that. God forbid that one thing ought to occur to me or vice versa.
“My daughter and I are so shut and moms are anticipated to be superheroes,” she says. “I really feel like that with my very own mother. It doesn’t matter what coloration, race, tradition or gender your mother is — she wears the cape.”
