Hay bales can weigh anywhere from 40 pounds to 2,000 pounds. One three-string bale weighs about 100 pounds, and there are about 20 of them in a tonne. Round bales weigh between 850 and 1100 pounds, and each tonne has between 2.4 and 1.8 round bales.
Hay is also sold in bales that are one tonne each. Each tonne has one bale. A standard three-string bale weighs about 140 pounds and breaks into 17 flakes that each weigh about 8 pounds. Two-string bales are small and only weigh between 40 and 75 pounds each. Hay that is too old is wrapped in a round bale. The best hay is wrapped in three-string bales.
