Normal college softball games last for a total of seven innings. Each team bats and plays defence in the field during an inning. The team that isn’t at home bats first. Most of the time, an inning is over when the home team gets three outs when it’s their turn to bat.
If the home team is ahead at the end of the visiting team’s turn to bat in the seventh inning, the game is over and there is no need for any more play. If the scores are the same for both teams, the game keeps going until one team ends an inning with a higher score. As of 2011, the longest college softball game ever played was between Creighton and Utah on May 11, 1991. It was 31 innings long.
