Is Sweetest Day for Men or Women?

The third Saturday of October is Sweetest Day. It is not for either men or women. It started out as a day to do something nice for orphans and the poor, but it has turned into a holiday for couples.

About.com says that Herbert Kingston, who worked at a candy company, started Sweetest Day in Cleveland, Ohio. He wanted to do something sweet for orphans and other people in Cleveland who were often forgotten. Starting in 1922, Kingston started giving these people boxes of candy. During the Great Depression, when movie stars helped pass out candy, the holiday became very well-known. People could show their love to anyone they wanted on that day, and it turned into a romantic holiday. It is mostly celebrated in Ohio, but over the years, it has spread to other states.
