Jaya Bachchan’s father scolded Her For Watching Bad Movies, Sharmila Tagore had a big hand in bringing the actress into film world had a big hand
Veteran actor Jaya Bachchan has given more than one film in Hindi cinema. Jaya Bachchan, who proved herself by working in many films like Sholay, Silsila, Guddi, Abhimaan, Zanjeer, Chupchupke, Abhimaan, first acted in Satyajit Ray’s ‘Mahanagar’. After this project, his mind shifted to films. Otherwise, before that he had no interest in the film world.
It was only after working in this film that Jaya got into the color of the film world that she got used to watching films. But one day his father scolded him badly. Jaya Bachchan herself had told about this in an interview. Jaya Bachchan had told in an interview to Rajya Sabha TV- ‘I have never planned anything in life. I accepted the way things turned out. As a child, I once went to Calcutta with my father. From there we went to Orissa.
On how Jaya Bachchan’s interest came in films, she had told- ‘A film shooting was going on in Orissa. We spent a lot of time with that unit, all were very good friends of my father. I was 12 years old at that time, so I was not so fond of films at that time. When the shooting was over we all came to Calcutta. During the shooting, a very close friendship was formed. So most met almost every day. Said at that time I was told that we would go to meet Satyajit Ray. So I said that if everyone is leaving, then we will also go.’
He told- ‘Now Sharmila Tagore had a big hand in this matter. She was the heroine in the film we went to see shooting. I had become very friends with him and he gave as much love as is given to a younger sister. At that time Satyajit Ray was casting for Mahanagar. I didn’t know why we were going there? I thought our dad is a writer, maybe because of this we are meeting. I came to know there that the casting of Mahanagar is taking place, in which a girl is needed for the role of a younger sister.’
Regarding Sharmila Tagore, he said- ‘Meanwhile Sharmila Tagore told Satyajit Ray that if you are casting then there is a girl, if you see her then you will take her immediately. After this Satyajit Ray told my father that I want Jaya. I was not interested at all, so I said what to do. On this my father said that look, not everyone gets such opportunities in life. You can understand what Satyaji Ray means to a small girl from Madhya Pradesh who has no interest in films! When I was shown a lot of explained films, then I said okay.
Jaya studied from Convent School: Jaya had told- ‘Now when the matter got stuck about school holidays, father said that I will talk. Because I used to study in convent school and the nuns will get very angry that they are working in films. That time was good, so I worked, I enjoyed a lot. When I came back I thought the nuns would be very angry but they were very happy and they were proud of me that I have acted in the film.
When Jaya was scolded by the father: Jaya had further told- ‘After this the hobby of watching films went up. I used to watch movies every day, so once my father got very angry that you guys watch so many straight movies, waste money. I don’t understand why these people make such films. There are good film institutes, where they should take training. So as soon as I heard it said ‘Film Institute’? Is there any place where acting also teaches. So he said – Yes, I do teach at all, so I was very surprised.
