Mirabai Chanu Khushi ke maare neend nahin aati waited so many years for this due to menstrual cramps indian weightlifter did not lift 119 kg weight won gold medal in tokyo olympics – How the Indian weightlifter who lifted 119 kg a few days ago missed the gold
Mirabai Chanu is the first weightlifter in the country to win a silver medal at the Olympics. His performance in the Rio Olympics was disappointing. She was sitting foul. After winning a medal in the Tokyo Olympics, she has now left the story of Rio far behind. During a conversation with The Indian Express, Mirabai and her coach Vijay Sharma discussed a range of topics.
In the conversation, Mirabai told that she could not sleep at night after the failure of the Rio Olympics. Now even after winning a medal in Tokyo, I can’t sleep. During this, the coach also told how Mirabai, who easily lifted 119 kg a few days ago, finally missed lifting 117 kg during the competition. Not only this, perhaps due to this mistake, he had to be content with silver medal instead of gold in Olympics.
During the conversation, Mirabai also told that lifting 87 kg snatch is more difficult than lifting 115 kg clean and jerk. Coach Vijay Sharma told that during every lift of Mirabai, her blood pressure used to increase. When Mirabai landed in Tokyo for the competition, her Rio performance danced in front of Vijay Sharma’s eyes. Because of this he was feeling a lot of pressure on himself.
Vijay Sharma said, “Even though we have had some great performances after Rio, but psychologically, there is always a feeling that it is the Olympics. Hope nothing goes wrong. That was the idea behind the introduction of 84, 87kg, to ensure a medal. When the snatch was over, we relaxed a bit thinking that we were in a competition now. we will do it.’
Mirabai told that after the Rio Olympics she had discussed her future with her mother. Mirabai said, ‘She is my pillar. They like sports. The family has made me dream of becoming a sportsperson. In the initial days, it was difficult to take a good diet. My mother tried. He told me, ‘Don’t look back, whatever comes, we will support you.’ She once said, ‘I can’t feed you properly, but I will do my best to take you to the top.’
Asked if she now sleeps after winning a medal in the Tokyo Olympics, Mirabai laughed and said, “Now I can’t sleep because of happiness.” For so many years we have waited for this day only. Do you miss training now? What will be the challenges ahead of the Paris Olympics? On the question, she said, ‘Yes, I miss it (training) a lot. I want to go back to training.
During the conversation, coach Vijay Sharma told that a day before the competition in Tokyo, Mirabai developed menstrual cramps. Vijay Sharma said, ‘Mirabai had had this problem before, so this time we were cautious. Mirabai was already in touch with a doctor. We chatted with him on Zoom. We also took preventive medicines to Tokyo.
However, he added, ‘The thing is you can’t be 100% sure with these things and that’s what happened. Mirabai missed lifting 117 kg, while she had lifted 119 kg a few days back. If she hadn’t had (menstrual cramps), she probably would have done even better. But that’s part of the game, you have to be prepared for everything. But yes, it affects the performance.’
Mirabai won the silver medal in the women’s 49kg category in Tokyo by lifting 202 kg (85 kg snatch and 115 clean and jerk). She failed to lift 117 kg in her last attempt in clean and jerk and 89 kg in snatch.
