Natalie Desselle, Comedic Coronary heart of ‘BAPS’ and ‘Eve,’ Dies at 53
“She beloved it — it was one among her favourite roles,” Ms. Robinson recalled the actress as telling her. “She acquired to be in a fairy story that was modified from white to Black.”
“For younger Black children to see tales that embody them, even fairy tales, is such an ‘I belong and I’m on this world, too,’ message,” Ms. Robinson mentioned.
Natalie Desselle Reid was born in Alexandria, La., on July 12, 1967. Her father, Paul Desselle, was an government groundskeeper on the England Air Power Base in Alexandria. Her mom, Thelma, was a cafeteria employee who later grew to become an administrative assistant at Peabody Magnet Excessive Faculty, from which Natalie, her sisters Paula and Calisa, and brother, Sherman, all graduated.
On April 6, 2003, Ms. Desselle married Leonard Reid. The couple had a son, Sereno, 23, and two teenage daughters, Summer time, and Sasha. Ms. Desselle took her husband’s surname however continued to work as Natalie Desselle.
She is survived by her husband, three youngsters, two sisters, brother and father.
Like her character in “BAPS,” Ms. Desselle, who Ms. Robinson mentioned had been impressed to pursue appearing by the 1950 movie “All About Eve,” went west to grow to be a star. She cold-called Ms. Robinson, one of many few Black ladies working as a supervisor at the moment, and requested to satisfy together with her.
“I wasn’t precisely comfortable to tackle too many Black shoppers as a result of it was simply too troublesome to get them work,” Ms. Robinson mentioned. “And being Black myself, that’s fairly an announcement to make.”
