Sam Elliott joins ‘Household Man’ as mayor

Welcome to the Wild Wild West.

Veteran actor Sam Elliott (and his iconic brush mustache) joins the surreal world of “Household Man” this Sunday as recurring character Wild Wild West, a horseback-riding cowboy cousin of deceased Mayor Adam West, performed by the real-life “Batman” star who died in 2017.

In his introductory episode (9:30 p.m. on Fox), Wild is recruited by Peter (Seth MacFarlane) to run for mayor of Quahog in opposition to native librarian Elle Hitler.

“My daughter has been a fan of [‘Family Guy’] for a lot of years, and it’s due to her that I’ve seen quite a lot of episodes,” says Elliott, 76. “To be sincere, I don’t wait up each week to observe, however I’ve actually been conscious [of the series]. You’ve bought to be residing in a gap someplace … There’s no escaping ‘Household Man.’

“There are quite a lot of super-intelligent, good those that produce this and some associates of mine checked out me and mentioned, ‘Actually? You’re gonna do that?’” Elliott says. “They only don’t get [the show]. My contribution is just about taking part in myself … It’s not like they wished me to provide you with a straight ‘character’ voice, so to talk. I’m leaning on the southwestern factor a bit bit. Past that, I’m taking part in it pretty straight and letting the jokes care for themselves.

“There’s an outdated saying, ‘If it ain’t on the web page, it ain’t on the stage,’ and I’ve at all times been a believer in that.”

Elliott is not any stranger to voiceover work; his honeyed, Western-tinged tones grace a wide range of commercials (together with Coors beer and Ram Vans) and he snared a 2013 Emmy nomination for enjoying a (claymation) model of himself on “Robotic Rooster,” the long-running Grownup Swim animated collection co-created by Seth Inexperienced.

“That’s what actually began this,” he says. “It began quite a lot of issues in my life and for my profession. I ended up getting a few different movies [because of ‘Robot Chicken’] and I did a movie with Lily Tomlin [‘Grandma’ in 2015] due to it.”

He says that, when he was approached about becoming a member of “Household Man,” producers wished him to play himself. “I wasn’t eager about doing that,” he says. “Adam [West] had accomplished that and he did it in spades, and that was like a bridge too far for me. I couldn’t think about being [myself] week after week.

“So that they kicked it round and got here again with this good concept for Wild Wild West that I couldn’t say no to,” he says. “It’s fascinating filling that void, footwear I might by no means even take into consideration filling … I needed to be someone else — and I’m grateful I occur to be a relative of Adam’s now.”

And, whereas “Household Man” usually ventures into risqué territory, Elliott says there was one scene the place he balked a bit at a number of traces of dialogue.

“I do have a certain quantity of integrity, and if it’s distasteful, no thanks,” he says. “There’s a sequence the place [Wild] talks about his background, what qualifies him for working for workplace, and he’s speaking about elevating his [16] daughters … and there have been a few traces that might’ve been taken completely the improper approach and I had no real interest in doing that.

“When speaking to the producers they noticed the place I used to be on that and mentioned, ‘No downside’ they usually modified it — and the change ended up being funnier.”

Elliott additionally will get an opportunity to sing in Sunday evening’s episode when Wild sits round a campfire and strums an acoustic guitar.

“That’s actually me. I’ve sung my whole life and my mother dragged me to sing in a cherub choir after I was 4 years outdated in Sacramento on the Congregational Church, and that started a lifetime of singing,” he says — including that he went to highschool with the fellows who shaped the Kingsmen, who had a No. 1 hit in 1963 with “Louie Louie.”

“I used to sing with these guys at dances,” he says. “I wasn’t a member of the band however they might again me up as a result of all of us went to the identical faculty.

“There was a cut-off date the place I believed my profession can be in music and never within the appearing sport. I by no means went after it,” he says. “I feel I’m a bit afraid of it.”
