“Republique Francaise” is the native name of France. Any coin produced as legal tender in France prior to the introduction of the Euro is a “Republique Francaise” coin.
In 2002, France, along with a number of other European nations, adopted the Euro as its currency. Previously, the country’s currency was the franc. Different denominations of francs were represented on different types of coins. In addition to being a fraction of the franc, the centime was also produced as a coin. The franc was launched in 1360 and had numerous design modifications before being abolished.
