According to the U.S. Treasury Federal Management Service, the Fed IMAD number is used by the Federal Reserve Bank to keep track of a transaction. It is made up of the date, the destination identifier, and the sequence number of the transaction. A Fedwire message has the Fed IMAD number.
Federal Reserve Bank Services says that the IMAD number is also used when reconciliation needs to be done. When a Fedwire transaction isn’t done right, this happens. The Fedwire transaction needs to be sent again, and the Fed IMAD number used in the first transfer will be used again in the second transfer.
