What Is an “in Care Of” Address?

With a “in care of” address, you can send a letter to someone who is staying somewhere else or getting mail somewhere else for a while. The correct way to address the letter is, for example, to write “C/O John Smith” under the name of the person who will actually get it.

Using a “in care of” address is the right way to send a letter if there is a chance that the mail might not get delivered if the name is unfamiliar. When addressing an envelope, the recipient’s information goes in the middle, and the sender’s name and address go in the upper left corner.
