According to WebMD, impaired judgement is a medical disease in which a person is unable to make sound decisions due to an underlying medical condition, environmental circumstances, food, or drugs/alcohol. It is frequently accompanied by weak social skills, impulsive or improper behaviour. Impairment of judgement can be a symptom of an illness or the fundamental medical issue, as well as a natural consequence of ageing.
Several illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, bipolar disorder, ADHD, drunkenness, depression, schizophrenia, child abuse, ALS dementia, and epilepsy, include impaired judgement as a symptom, according to WebMD.
According to the Mayo Clinic, many individuals with impaired judgement suffer from moderate cognitive impairment, which also affects memory, language, and thinking skills. Many elderly suffer from minor cognitive impairment without exhibiting any other symptoms. Mild cognitive impairment is less severe than dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, but persons with MCI have an increased chance of developing these conditions.
According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can also lead to impaired judgement in individuals. This is because stress hinders people’s ability to deliberate before making decisions. Studies indicate that adults over the age of 70 who consume a diet heavy in carbs and sugar have an increased risk of cognitive impairments such as impaired judgement.
