Coat closet rods that are meant to hold coats or dresses should be 66 to 69 inches off the ground. When two rods are hung one over the other in a closet, the lower rod should be 42 inches from the floor and the higher rod should be 36 to 42 inches above that.
Rods should be hung 21 to 24 inches from the back wall of the closet so that clothes have enough room to hang. The lower rod in a double-hung closet for kids can start 29 inches off the ground. Each piece of clothing should have 1 to 2 1/2 inches of room on the rod.
