The average bedroom size in new American homes ranges between 120 and 150 square feet. The average size of a master bedroom is over 200 square feet, excluding closet and bathroom space.
Newer homes have significantly larger bedrooms than those built before the 1990s. International Code Council amendments to the building code stipulate the minimum size criteria for a room to be designated as a bedroom. Either livable space must have at least 7 linear feet of floor space in any horizontal direction, per the 2006 code R304. Each residential unit must include at least one 120-square-foot-or-larger room, and no usable space may be smaller than 70 square feet.
