Where Does the Attention Line Go on an Envelope?

A letter’s intended recipient can be determined by looking at the attention line. Based on USPS examples, it’s clear that the attention line belongs at the beginning of the address. For instance, “John H. Doe” could be printed there.

The street address comes after the attention line when sending mail to a private address. The city, state, and zip code line follows. A business letter’s format consists of an attention line, a line containing the company’s name, and two lines containing the same address information. There is no requirement to use the word “attention” itself.
