The Sobriety Circle and Triangle Symbol is a triangle inside a circle. It is used by the Alcoholics Anonymous group. The equilateral triangle stands for unity, recovery, and service as a response to the physical, mental, and spiritual parts of the disease of alcoholism. The circle around it stands for wholeness or oneness, as well as peace and perfection.
The symbol comes from several native cultures. Priests and medicine men thought that the circle around the triangle kept evil spirits away. Bill Wilson, who helped start AA, chose the symbol to show how the power of the mind and body can keep away the bad spirits that lead to addiction.
